I took this photo around 7:15 am, today, for several reasons: the sun was shining; I was intrigued by the reflection of the window, baskets and "this tree" in the lacquered surface of the dining room table. And I was journaling, thinking about yesterday, today, tomorrow, life - in general and particular.
Welcome sunshine! Soooo glad you've returned, e'en tho' it's still cold...but there is the promise of sunshine and warm... I drifted off, thinking about yesterday's news : the tragedy of SWAir's flight; the Starbuck's incident; and Barbara Bush's dying.
Sipping tea; looking out; hearing AM rush hour traffic, the furnace clicks on - yes, it's still cold enough - 36° F degrees. Yes, this tree is indeed greener...just heard a couple yapping dogs - quiet now...looking at my nails and wondering what's causing them to be so brittle: something with my diet? cuticles too dry?
My thoughts returned to Barbara Bush and I remembered the photo I have of my mother meeting her in the White House at a reception she held for a national Adult New Reader Literacy Conference. (At the time, I was working in the public library and had created a program and book collection that supported the efforts of the volunteer literacy program and adults learning to read - who came from all over the country - to share their story with Congress and one another. I was also on the conference steering committee.) Mrs. Bush, then the First Lady, had a reception for the new readers, literacy volunteers, and conference committee. I remember how gracious, open, real Mrs. Bush was - genuinely interested in each new reader and so personable as we all, each, met her in the receiving line.
I said a prayer of gratitude for this woman who reached out to so many adults and by doing so, helped them achieve their goal of being able to read.
Joining Kat and others here for unraveled wednesday.
