When I was a child, we lived in Muskegon Michigan - on the other side of Lake Michigan, east of Chicago. We spent many a summer and Christmas holidays between the two cities. On the way to Chicago, we passed a Morton Salt mine/processing center. Always introduced by a big, huge sign with image of the Morton Salt Girl and the famous slogan: "When it rains it pours."
I was always puzzled - what dd that possibly mean? It made actually no sense to me...and I would ponder, silently...coming up with zero conclusion. I don't recall ever asking my parents to explain this conundrum to me, perhaps because I thought I could (should?) figure it out for myself! My memory isn't exact but I believe I was 7 or 8 years old when I finally understood the slogan. As we approached the salt mine, I remember blurting out : Yes! That's what it means!" My mother said:" Yes, that's what what means?" And I explained to her my puzzlement and pride at actually having figured it all out, by myself! Of course, my parents applauded my success.
Easily, as I've gone through life, whenever I've seen the infamous Morton Salt Girl, this story, this remember when comes to mind. On a walk earlier this month - April 5 - you can imagine therefore my huge smile and trip down memory lane when I came upon the ad on a bus kiosk, just a few blocks from home. Out came my iPhone (how did I ever live without it's camera?) and snap, snap, snap! I have been saving the photo/story and this morning, taking a break from quilts on the mind, reviewing the calendar for future blog post topics, I remembered the ad/story/ and this week's ThinkWriteThursday prompt...Aha! Perfect!
Thanks to Carole and Kat for the memory jog and the opportunity to share here. And you can visit Carole's blog to view others' remember when posts.
