Last Friday, my friend Margaret and I went to a special exhibition at The Phillips Collection, located on DuPont Circle in Washington DC. The exhibit on view, October 8, 2016 through January 8, 2017 features the works of two African American artists :
- Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series, featuring all 60 panels of this seminal masterpiece depicting the mass movement of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North between World Wars I and II. The Phillips and the Museum of Modern Art each own 30 of the 60 panels; the entire collection has been together just a few times. You can learn more about the photo above from the exhibit here , including hearing a brief audio description told by Lawrence...and you can go here to see all 60 panels.
Whispers: Rising River Blues
- Whitfield Lovell's The Kin Series is the second exhibit. Lovell, born in 1959 has a vision and artistic expression that is riveting. As described on the Phillips' website: Lovell carefully juxtaposes an exquisitely drawn African American face with timeworn objects from everyday life. This particular portrait and the staging of clothing and phonograph is explained below:
Next month, I hope to visit the National Museum of African American History and Cultural that opened just a few weeks ago. Demand for tickets is still at a high.
